Mild Steel

Mild steel is made from alloy steel in the most available of cold rolled steels. Mild steel generally available in round rod shape, square bar and rectangle bar. It has a good combination of all typical traits of steel, strength, some ductility and comparative ease of machining. Chemically composition of mild steel is very similar to A36 hot rolled steel, but the cold rolling process creates a better surface finish and better properties.

Minimum properties require of mild steel as follows:
  • Ultimate tensile strength: 63,800 psi
  • Yield Strength: 53, 700 psi
  • Elongation: 15,0 %
  • Rockwell Hardness: 871
The chemical composition of mild steel is very similar among the producers contain normally the following steel raw materials:
  • Iron (Fe): 98.81 - 99.26 %
  • Carbon (C): 0.18 %
  • Manganese (Mn): 0.6 - 0.9 %
  • Phosphorous (P): 0.04 %
  • Sulfur (S): maximum 0.05 %
While as the ASTM standard for A36 steel is the most commonly available of the hot rolled steels. This generally is available in round rod, square bar, rectangle bar, as well as steel shaped such as I-beam, H-beam, angles, and channels. The hot roll process means that the surface on this steel will be somewhat rough. Yield strength is also significantly less than 1081, this mean that it will bend much more quickly than 1018.

Minimum properties require of mild steel as required by ASTM:
  • Ultimate tensile strength: 58,000 - 79,800 psi
  • Yield Strength: 36,300 psi
  • Elongation: 25,0 %
The chemical composition A36 that required by ASTM standard as follows:
  • Iron (Fe): 99 %
  • Carbon (C): 0.26 %
  • Manganese (Mn): 0.75 %
  • Copper (Cu): 0.2 %
  • Phosphorous (P): 0.04 %
  • Sulfur (S): maximum 0.05 %

How to Joint Iron without Welding

Joining iron without being welded is nothing new but usually the result is not as strong as if it were connected by welding. We can connect...
